City Lights: Sub-radio plays Jammin ‘Java
In 2019, Sub-Radio members quit their daily jobs to pursue rock ‘n’ roll glory full-time, earning a show-by-show audience and planning a U.S. tour in 2020 that would have included a stop at South by Southwest. . Those plans were scrapped thanks to the coronavirus, and the group had to get creative to continue building their following. An answer came to the guitarist and the singer Matt Prodanovich during a late night scroll party on Reddit. “After a few nights of seeing different artists on these streams with a high viewership, I went to guys and I was like, ‘Hey, maybe we should try this,’ he says. Inventive paid off, as the weekly sextet performances from the basement of Prodanovich, which debuted on September 25, 2020, quickly drew hundreds of thousands of viewers, drawing fans around the world, as well as the industry attention (they now have an agent and reporter) Sub-Radio song “Out of my mind” was recently featured on DC101’s “New at 2”, something members are thrilled with. “The only time we’ve been on local radio here is as a contest winner,” jokes the keyboardist-guitarist. John fengya. “So it’s really cool that this is finally happening.” Now, the fully vaccinated group will come out of the basement, playing a free outdoor show at Jammin ‘Java on May 22. Anticipating a much larger turnout, thanks to their new Reddit audience, Sub-Radio’s main concern is keeping everyone safe. “We expect a lot more people than last time”, says guitarist Kyle cochran. “We want to ask people to maintain their social distance and all that.” Sub-Radio will perform live outdoors at 7 p.m. on May 22 at Jammin ‘Java, 227 Maple Ave. E, Vienna.
