The composer of the thematic song “Friends” immediately knew that the show would be “magical”.
Michael Skloff arranged the Rembrandts song ‘I’ll Be There For You’ which featured the soundtrack from the credits of every episode of the iconic NBC sitcom – which aired from 1994 to 2004 – and he knew the show was going to be a monster success when he first read the script.
He said, “When I first read the script I knew it was magical. It felt a lot more special than anything I had read before.”
Michael – who was married to ‘Friends’ co-creator Marta Kauffman for 31 years until their divorce in November 2015 – revealed he took inspiration from The Beatles while working on the theme and trying to recreate the upbeat “sentiment” provided on Paul McCartney and his song “Paperback Writer”.
In an interview with Sky News, he said: “I turned on the radio and the Beatles song ‘Paperback Writer’ come in and I’m immediately like, ‘Oh my God, that’s the perfect feeling for this show, it there’s just that uplifting and that energy. “
Skloff added that the record was only meant to be brief for television viewing, but was asked to write a full-length version as the song became popular with viewers.
The songwriter said: “It was written as a 45 second TV theme. Disc jockey kept getting requests to play it in their shows, so Warner Bros. told me we should write an unabridged version. of the song and upload it. Rembrandts’ album. The TV show created demand for the full version. “
