Ginger Latimer, producer, actor and former drama teacher at Madera South High School, will begin giving theater arts classes to youth ages 8 to 13 at Madera County Arts Council.
Starting October 13, students “will embark on a 6 week journey that includes acting skills, improvisation, voice, timing, theater appreciation and even a bit of theater history.” according to Latimer. In addition, “the students will have to perform in this class. It’s really not as scary as it sounds, and we’ll gradually move on to performance, ”says Latimer.
“We have wanted to add the performing arts to our list of offerings for many years,” said Arts Council Executive Director Jim Kocher, “and we think Ginger Latimer is the right person to provide a great launch. for what we hope will mean more involvement in the theater.
The Arts Council’s plans include extending drama classes to older children, aged 14 to 17, and adults 18 and older. The ultimate goal is to create a community theater that brings together people from across the region to perform on stage.
According to Board Chair Dianne Rich, “At our recent ‘Celebrate Agriculture’ fundraiser, we generated a lot of community interest and even raised some great seed money. to be able to run this program. Madera had a community theater many years ago, and we think now may be the time to start laying the groundwork for this kind of group.
The current theatrical arts course for youth ages 8 to 13 will start on October 13 and will run Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. until November 17. The cost is $ 120 per student for the duration of 6 weeks. Classes will take place at the Madera Arts Council (424 N. Gateway). Registration and payment can be made online at maderaarts.org or at 661-7005.
