New sewing and fabric store opens in Mount Rainier

A new sewing and fabric store recently opened in Mount Rainier offering a wide selection of high quality fabrics, especially from Australia and parts of Africa, as well as sewing lessons for children and adults. .

Located at 3830 34th St. on the corner of the new Pennyroyal Station, Sew Chic Fabrics and Crafts offers workshops and classes for all ages.

The Hyattsville Wire met owner Donna Whitaker, who grew up in New Jersey and now resides in Upper Marlboro, who said she shared a space in Mount Rainier when she got the opportunity to open her own boutique. . She said she wanted to stay in the area not only because of its diversity, but also because it’s family-friendly and a place where the arts are valued.

Whitaker said she is offering classes at her new location, but due to the pandemic class sizes cannot exceed four at a time. She offers classes for beginners and advanced, and specializes in making bras and jeans.

A three-session beginner’s sewing class teaches students how to make pillows, tote bags, cosmetic bags, slip-on shorts, or pajama bottoms for $ 149.

Private sewing lessons are also available, and knitting, crochet and leather goods lessons will be added soon.

“I’ve been a cousin since I was 10 and always knew I wanted to grow in this business,” she told The Wire. “I worked a lot from home. Now I have my own store where I take all my customers.

The store also sells everything from fabrics, patterns and accessories to sewing machines, although store hours are by appointment only during the pandemic or you can shop at their online store. He wears Tula Pink fabrics as well as several self-designed Whitaker.
