Pantami Chair: FUTO Alumni write management, give 7-day ultimatum for explanation
Concerned about the recent damaging articles against the Federal University of Technology in Owerri (FUTO), the leadership of the institution’s Alumni Association wrote to the FUTO leadership and issued a seven-day ultimatum in which the university must respond on the circumstances. leading to the recent appointment of Dr Isa Ali Pantami as professor.
The association, in its letter signed by National President Ndubuisi Chijioke and forwarded to FUTO, expressed serious regret over an embarrassing article labeled FUTO – “Fraudsters University of Technology Owerri” aimed at destroying their reputation and image. Alma mater.
He said that the association, coming out of its CEN meeting on September 12, 2021, decided to write to the university on the subject, which was done quickly and on September 15, 2021, the alumni letter was received by the university but without any response yet.
Chijioke said if FUTO leadership does not respond or comply with the seven-day ultimatum, the alumni association will have no choice but to act within the law and prosecute. his next line of action.
According to him, the letter was intended to give the university an opportunity to explain the circumstances of the said appointment through specific questions asked about the process leading to the appointment.
The national president said that the association’s locus standi for asking questions was based on the fact that the alumni body is a key player in the university enterprise, while more legally, “the FOI law allows alumni to request any information from a public public institution or official regarding the operations, processes and decisions of that public institution.
“The law is a law that requires full compliance by responsible parties and therefore we expect the university to answer the 12 questions we have asked,” Chijoke said.
Chijioke stressed that “providing these answers to the question should form the basis of an engagement, investigation or outright determination of what happened and of the options and ways forward to remedy this. horrible situation ”.
According to him, the university’s response would allow the association to determine “whether it was a case of individual or collective failure of the Board of Directors or of pure negligence in their fiduciary responsibilities or ‘a case of impunity of the director general of the university.
The national president said the university’s response would allow alumni to determine how to approach or advance other actions.
He said: “The FOI law specifically obliges the public institution to respond within 7 days to any request made to it. On the 22nd, it will be exactly 7 days after the University receives our request. Not providing a response by the 22nd can only mean three things: 1) it failed the first test of accountability and transparency. 2) he defied an existing law requiring him to avail himself of this information on request. 3) he unfortunately has something to hide about this action which aroused the opprobrium of the general public.
Chijioke said that if the alumni do not receive a response by that date, after giving the university leadership the opportunity to clarify, “then it will be appropriate to draw conclusions from the information available to the alumni. and then take further action “. .
He said the association “will take further action, including a public statement making the alumni community aware of the actions taken so far and the university’s non-response, and will force the university to provide the records and procedures leading to this decision “.
He therefore urged all members to patiently wait for the seven days the law has given the University to respond, adding that if they do not respond, the association will act in accordance with the law to continue our next action.
The National President pointed out that their letter asked 12 questions which are:
“Provide the National Executive Board of the FUTO Alumni Association with the minutes of the proceedings of the University Board of Trustees meeting at which this appointment was made.”
“Know the register of Board members present at the time of approval of this appointment.
