Susie Garza Navarijo’s Reference Workbook makes learning to read and write in English and Spanish a fun and less frustrating experience
Learning to read, speak or teach a second language can be a daunting task. But when you are able to see the commonalities of each language, it can be much easier. So, worry no more. Susie G. Navarijo’s workbook is one of the simplest learning materials to date. This is a must have for any second language trainer in English and Spanish. The workbook is designed to formulate multiple strategies and methods that will respond to each learner according to their different learning progressions in the two languages. It offers various learning to read graphics that alleviate difficulties. Graphics can be complex at first, but once readers go through the directions, they become easier to follow. Through consistent reading practice in either language, the student will eventually pronounce words correctly because English vowels and syllables are repeated in graphics, sentences, and then paragraphs. Using this method, reading is dynamic, intuitive, and easy to master over time. The methods of presentation of the material offered here should be a standard in all language textbooks.
As the student progresses there will be obstacles, but understanding will come while developing fluency. Some progress will come through trial and error, but for it to be perfect, practice is necessary, because as in all learning experiences, mistakes are inevitable and normal, but practice is key.
As all learning roadmaps are concerned, understanding is not the only factor. What is worth it is the sheer pleasure of reading. When reading becomes second nature, learning is much faster and writing is a snap. The workbook will allow the student to persevere and the instructor to be able to follow the improvement of the learner. One of the most important factors is therefore to combine the three elements: reading, comprehension and writing. This will ensure a learning experience that is worth investing the time in for each reader, not only for learning to read, but for other future endeavors as well.
Mastering a language is not just about learning to speak a language, but the ability to understand and hold a conversation with ease. This fluency provides a benefit to any learning student once he or she harnesses the ability to speak as well as understand the language he or she has learned. The workbook is an absolute must in any language learning institution.

About the Author
Susie G. Navarijo is a retired first year teacher. She taught for thirty years at Cable Elementary in the Northside District of San Antonio, Texas, where she was one of the district’s first bilingual teachers. In 1986, she was named Bilingual Teacher of the Year by the San Antonio Area Association for Bilingual Education. Because she had to divide her groups into English and Spanish, as well as by ability, she developed methods that allowed her to point out commonalities in both languages.
Ms. Navarijo received her Bachelor of Education in 1972 and her Masters of Education in 1979 from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas. She is certified as a bilingual / English as a second language elementary teacher. After her retirement, her love of children and her success in teaching led her to give private lessons to migrant children. The book will allow Ms. Navarijo to share her successful method, as well as her experiences, with other teachers, guardians and parents in the hope that her belief that every child can learn will become a reality in every classroom in America.
