Tell Me Something Good: Local Radio DJ Brings Classic Radio Comfort Into A New Era
TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD (WSYR-TV) – Central New York has listened to Gary Dunes for 40 years.
For kids like Dunes who were growing up, DJs were constant companions.
“In the early days of radio, in the late ’60s and early’ 70s, when I grew up listening, these guys were your friends. You have to know them, ”said Dunes
Now Gary is talking to the world. He is co-owner, general manager and morning DJ of Internet station RadioHits.US. It’s an idea they started in the 90s, when most people only had internet on their desktops.
“That’s the big difference now. It is available in cars, and the playing field is much larger. We get a lot of calls. I have friends from across the country who remember me on the radio here and frankly people all over the world, ”Dunes said.
The programming might be familiar to Syracuse listeners. Brian Ocean is the guy who brought up the idea over 20 years ago. Simone does lunch from her current home in Florida.
And one of those jockeys Dunes grew up listening to, Dave Laird, even does a weekend show for him from Tennessee.
Dunes worked around the dial, at 93Q, WSEN, Sunny 102. And he’s also well known as the frontman of the ever popular Dunes and the Del-tunes.
Gary says the station’s heartwarming mix of ’80s to 2000s success draws listeners from Japan, Mexico, France, the UK and beyond, including former mid-New Yorkers who aspire to the House.
“You know, we market ourselves as RadioHits.US. Made in America. And I think it’s, I think American radio because we’re not just a jukebox. We play 55 minutes of music, but there’s a certain personality to it, ”Dunes said of the station.
And radio is the perfect way to celebrate Independence Weekend, wherever you are.
