US 50 CLOSED FOR 24 HOURS – Radio Heart of the Rockies
The Little Blue Creek Canyon Project Team is announcing a full 24 hour road closure between MP 123 and MP 127 at Little Blue Creek Canyon today, Monday, May 24 through tomorrow, May 25, until 5:30 p.m.
The roadway is fully closed in both directions east of Gunnison and the Blue Mesa Reservoir and no vehicles will be allowed to pass. The 24 hour shutdown is necessary for the safe removal of a large section of rock. Emergency vehicles will be able to cross the project area.
“This afternoon, during regular activities associated with rock work, the teams discovered a large rock formation to compromise. The rock formation sits about 100 feet above the road and is probably 1,000 tons. Due to the safety of motorists, a complete closure of the roadway is necessary, ”says Kathleen Wanatowicz, public information manager for the Little Blue Creek Canyon project. “We thank everyone for their patience as we work to safely remove the rock formation and create a clear road.”
Arrowhead Residents: Access from Gunnison (east side) is possible for Arrowhead and Alpine Plateau Road residents, traffic control will be in use. Detour routes are recommended.
